Every Home Needs An Elephant is a sweet story of self-discovery and learning to appreciate the qualities that make others special and unique. When quirky, creative Sarah brings home a pet elephant to beat the boredom of summer vacation, her mom finds it too disruptive to her usually ordinary life. Sarah’s quest to find a safe space for her and the elephant to fit in reminds everyone to recognize each other’s needs and strengths as they work together to solve a problem. This message supports students’ understanding of the core competency of Collaborating, wherein they learn to value diverse perspectives and work collectively to integrate each other’s ideas as they work toward a common goal. Students will recognize that stories can be used to help them understand their personal and community identities and make meaning, aligning with English Language curricular competencies.
