Descriptive Review
Finders Keepers is part of the Orca Currents series for emerging and struggling readers. Presented in an ultra-readable format, the font, uncrowded pages, and cream-coloured paper are chosen to support readers with dyslexia and other learning challenges. Finders Keepers is an adventure novel set in a lake resort town in Alberta. Twelve-year-old Macy considers herself a treasure hunter. When she is rescued from the lake by a mermaid, Macy enlists the help of her friends, young and old, to help MerKay return to the West Coast of BC. Literary themes include relationships, family, and community belonging. Additionally, the book provides an entry point for the genres of fantasy and mystery. There are many extensions possible, such as learning about mythological creatures or comparing and contrasting fairy tales about mermaids. Interdisciplinary connection to Science is possible through an inquiry into aquatic environments.
