Descriptive Review
Giju's Gift is a fictional comic book story written by Brandon Mitchell and illustrated by Veronika Barinova. Mitchell is a Mi'kmaw man from Listuguj, Quebec, the founder of Birch Bark Comics, and the creator of the Sacred Circles comic book series. Mitchell draws on his Mi'kmaq heritage and place-based knowledge in his comic book series. This story is about a young Mi'kmaw girl from Listuguj, Quebec, and puts a contemporary spin on the Pugulatmu'j (Little People). Mitchell touches upon the importance of memories and stories through the medicine bag and reminds readers of the importance of keeping your stories alive. This comic also includes an appropriate activity for all ages that connects the concept of medicine bags to its intention rather than the common appropriation of the object. Please note: Mi'kmaq is the plural form of Mi'kmaw. It refers to more than one person or the entire Nation.
