Descriptive Review
Wilfred Buck’s I Have Lived Four Lives is part memoir and part scientific exploration into Indigenous cosmology and Cree constellations. His stories, though different in subject matter, seamlessly flow together as a web of interconnected Indigenous understandings. Buck describes in vivid reality and dreamscapes the many extreme obstacles he has had to overcome in connection to colonization, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the devastation they leave behind with disconnection, alcoholism, abuse, and trauma. He also shares the ways that his roles as a dream keeper, pipe carrier, and scientific educator have led him from destruction into light. Wilfred Buck is known as an esteemed Traditional Knowledge holder, philosopher, and lifelong student of the Elders and constellations. This collection of stories and Indigenous science is an influential example of the ways that perspectives, worldviews, and understandings shape the past, present, and future.
