Descriptive Review

If a Tree Falls builds children’s understanding of deforestation and its effect on the environment, and how countries attempt to save and manage their forests. Vivid colour photographs, clear writing and layout, and a glossary make this book accessible to a range of learners. The text provides a global overview of deforestation yet includes enough Canadian content to help make the issue relevant for students. While the issue of deforestation is a complex global problem, there are examples of citizens making a positive impact, such as the story of two girls who convinced the Girl Guides to switch to using sustainable palm oil in their cookies. These stories illustrate critical thinking and responsibility as readers learn how deforestation can be curtailed. Overall, this book will support learning about trees as a natural resource and the challenges of building an economy that is viable and sustainable. The book is part of the Orca Footprints series.
