Inuunira is a true story told by Brian Koonoo, who is Inuit and from Pond Inlet, about his extraordinary experience surviving seven days in Canada's Arctic. It is illustrated by Ben Shannon, a Canadian-born cartoonist and illustrator who has worked for Rolling Stone, National Geographic, and the Globe and Mail. This story is told in a diary format that depicts Brian's authentic experience navigating the harsh land conditions during his arduous survival journey. In addition, Brian makes anecdotal references to the Knowledge his father and Elders taught him—modern and traditional. Brian believes that it was because of this Knowledge, passed down through generations, that he was able to survive and tell this story today. This book includes illustrations and photographs as well as a glossary of Inuktut words, definitions, and romanized pronunciations.

Brian Koonoo was born and grew up in Pond Inlet. He is married to Samantha Koonoo, originally from Rankin Inlet. They have six daughters at home, Chantal, Janelle, Josephina, Shanelle, Alina and Alaira. Chantal and her partner Curtis have a son named Rogan, who is Brian and Samantha’s first grandson and first boy in the family. Brian currently works with Parks Canada as a resource management officer. Brian continues to hunt and provides country food for his family, relatives, and community.
