Descriptive Review

This Orca Think nonfiction title presents a survey of how artists are using their talents and creativity to address environmental concerns. The topic is introduced by defining the concept of environmental art, examining sustainable art materials, and explaining the models of the circular and repair economies. Subsequent chapters explore ways that artistic approaches to science and design are being used to protect coral reefs, bees, and a variety of animal habitats, and how architectural and creative urban installations can promote sustainability and support wildlife. Numerous examples, photographs, and sidebars illustrate how art can be used as a powerful and persuasive form of protest (artivism).

Several current artists and their installations are showcased throughout and the “What Can You Do” sections and encourage students to explore their own artistic ideas. While there is no in-depth treatment of any particular aspect, a comprehensive index assists in locating specific information, making this niche resource more accessible.
