Descriptive Review

Inspire inquiry and dig deeper with this nonfiction text about volcanoes from all around the world. Author Julie Roberge provides highly engaging facts, stories, and context surrounding some of the world's most famous volcanoes while also shedding light on some lesser-known but nonetheless fascinating ones too. In the study of energy, major local landforms, layers of the Earth, and plate tectonic movements, students in Science grades 3 to 8, and students of all ages, can learn facts about volcanoes to extend their thinking and understanding of the formation of the Earth over time. Students might choose to zoom in on a specific volcano that interests them and research it further to design and create a replica of it in ADST and Arts Education. Further extensions might include students conducting science experiments to make their model volcanoes come to life. This book was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection.

About the authors

Julie Roberge has been studying volcanoes around the world for over 25 years. Nicknamed the "Ash Hunter," she is originally from Nicolet, Quebec, and is a professor and research scientist at the Polytechnic School of Mexico (Instituto Politécnico Nacional). She did her bachelor's degree in geology at the University of Montreal, her master's degree at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi and her doctorate at the University of Oregon. Julie has been collecting rocks since she was young and it was the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 that ignited her passion for volcanoes. Today she hunts the ashes of erupting volcanoes to look for magmatic inclusions, small balls of magma caught inside crystals that go from 1200 to 25 degrees Celsius to become glass droplets during an eruption. She lives in Mexico City.
