Descriptive Review

Part of the Nunavummi Reading Series (Level 9), My Dear Nuakuluapik, by Clyde River author Irene Jonas, is a thoughtful story told through the eyes of a young Inuit girl about the enduring relationship she had while growing up alongside her grandmother. Through levelled text and thoughtful illustrations, this book portrays the day-to-day activities and routines of a child and caregiver living today in the Canadian Arctic. From cooking and sewing to honouring important intergenerational roles and responsibilities, Jonas’s book offers new readers an accessible way to connect with modern Inuit life. This book also provides a simple Inuktitut glossary (with link) for readers. My Dear Nuakuluapik is suitable for both guided and independent reading activities targeting learners in Grades 1–3. This book aligns with the Fountas & Pinnell Text Level System, Level: I.
