Descriptive Review
The Orange Shirt Society has put together a primer on Orange Shirt Day that could be used for any grade level. The book begins with how residential schools started and how they impacted Indigenous Peoples in Canada. The book details how the Orange Shirt Society began after Phyllis Webstad’s public telling of her memory of having her orange shirt taken away on the first day she attended residential school. Stories, art, and quotes from Survivors, leaders, students, and society members are incorporated throughout. At the end of each chapter, reflection and response questions are included, as well as learning activity ideas. A chapter on ways to participate in Orange Shirt Day is included. There is some repetition of images and information. This book would be best used when divided into section readings and used in a jigsaw activity, or as supplemental paragraphs or sections to a textbook.
