Author Lois Peterson brings years of experience working with people experiencing homelessness—as a librarian who often helped people use computers to access support services and as the executive director of a shelter. She speaks directly to children, offering clear instructions on dealing with specific problems, such as finding a discarded syringe. She cites many instances of how volunteers, including kids, can make a difference. Her overall message is that the people who are experiencing homelessness among us are human beings who deserve to have their needs met and who are worthy of respect. She cites many statistics but does this by seamlessly working such data into the stories she shares. Sidebars offer personal anecdotes from her own experiences working with people on the street, as well as challenges posed in “Think about this” notes (e.g., “How would you feel if you had to sleep in a car?”). Lois Peterson wrote short stories and articles for adults for twenty years before turning to writing for kids. She was bornin England and has lived in Iraq, France and the United States. Recently retired from her job as a librarian, she now lives in Surrey, British Columbia, where she writes, reads and teaches creative writing to adults, teens and children. Lois is the author of several books for children and youth, including Beyond Repair in the Orca Currents series.

Taryn Gee is an artist who specializes in lifestyle illustration and possesses an affinity for both figurative and narrative art. She has been illustrating since 2011 after earning her bachelor of applied arts at Sheridan College. Her work has garnered numerous awards, appearing across various local and international publications. Some of Taryn’s clients include The National Post, The Globe and Mail, IBM, RBC, LA Galaxy and the social networking service Ravelry. Taryn is passionate about the process and exploratory nature of traditional sketching and often finds herself filling many pages of her various sketchbooks. She lives in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
