Descriptive Review

Solidarity, in this text, refers to the BC event sparked in reaction to right-wing policies introduced by the provincial government in 1983. High-quality black-and-white photos and copies of leaflets from the many rallies illustrate this fascinating time in labour history. This social change movement involved university organizations, unions, teacher federations, various left-wing political parties, women’s organizations, musicians, environmental protesters, and LGBTQIA2S+ groups across the US and Canada. Much of the material includes media reporting and first-person accounts. The historical background of this social movement extends to the early 20th century; racial issues are discussed in the context of that time. Indigenous roles are discussed only as integrated within the dominant white political scene. A glossary of acronyms, an index, and footnotes support this rich, accessible text. Detail-rich, this text is ideal for inquiry projects, with individuals or groups of students taking a chapter to explore and learn. The chapters are an average of twenty pages each.
