Descriptive Review
Inuit Elder, Illuitok, retells a Traditional Kugaaruk Story about the child-stealing Amajurjuk. After a young child is taken by the formidable ogress, the father decides he must find his daughter. Although frightened, he devises a plan to rescue his child. The vivid, graphic novel-quality illustrations fully support the text and offer visual access to the story. Clear sequencing and just the right amount of description make this an enjoyable and accessible story, while the informal language evokes a sense of listening to an Elder tell the story. Educators may use this rich resource to support learning about traditional Inuit culture, the Far North, story elements and use it as a comparison of the stories of monsters and ogres from other cultures. A pronunciation guide is included at the back of the book.
