Descriptive Review

Julia Ogina and Emily Jackson have written a storybook about a big blizzard in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. The story is written in Inuktitut syllabics and English, with some key vocabulary (such as names) in Inuinnaqtun as well. This book is a window into winter in the Arctic tundra. Concepts such as knowing how to read the weather and learning how to pass the time indoors are explored. Students might research tools to help read the weather, from looking out the window to creating weather instruments like wind vanes, would beas a fun way to extend the story. Discussing and creating activities for “inside days” would also be of practical benefit for classrooms.
