Descriptive Review

This nonfiction title is written with multi-levelled readers in mind, with each chapter beginning with a photograph and a simplified large-print introduction. Created as a guide to wildlife commonly found in our urban environments, the text features hands-on experiments and observations entwined with sidebar extension activities called “Insider Info” and encouraging words to “Dive Deep.” The text opens with a discussion of equipment needs, such as binoculars and specimen containers, plus important safety tips for being around animals and plants. This is an excellent guide for outdoor education pursuits in the reader’s own neighbourhood, with clear directions for a variety of STEM and art projects. The author includes an explanation of what an index is and how to use it to direct readers to their own areas of interest. The book lacks subheadings, any highlighting or bolding of key vocabulary, and captions for the photographs. This book was originally published in German.
