Descriptive Review

This beginning chapter book offers a first-person perspective into the world of a great horned owl fledgling, launched on a reluctant adventure after a fall from a backyard tree. Rescued and transported to a wildlife sanctuary, then later a rehabilitation centre, the little owl must learn to navigate each new and confusing situation without the guidance and security of his family. The story is both engaging and informative as readers meet a variety of different raptors and learn about the care of these injured birds. The coming-of-age theme, introduced through the owlet’s angst-ridden struggles to answer the question “What is your name?” may not be entirely relatable for younger readers. However, they are sure to enjoy the sense of humour infused throughout and delight when the little protagonist learns to make new friends, bravely finds the courage to face his fears, and eventually discovers his own name.
