Descriptive Review

Born in the Soviet Union to German parents (‘kulaks’), then exiled to Siberia, Kayla escaped with her sister and worked as a refugee in East Prussia. In 1945, during the Red Army's advance through Germany, she was separated from her siblings. She was then sentenced to work as a POW in the Ural Mountains, where she was yoked to another woman, and together they pulled loaded coal carts. Her German/Russian background saved her from harsher brutalities when she was chosen as the ‘strosta’ (messenger), repeating orders to the other POWs. “Those who don’t work, don’t eat.” Instead of slaving in the mines, she was kept up nights translating for German commanders during ruthless POW interrogations. Inspired by the powerful memories shared by Goldstone’s mother, who spent over two years in a Soviet-forced labour camp, Goldstone, an award-winning author of five books, skillfully wrote this riveting, not overly graphic, compassionate survival story from a unique German-Russian perspective. Highly recommended for high school students.
