Descriptive Review

This new addition to the Orca Think nonfiction series explores the history of scientific research and the factors influencing whether new innovations are freely shared or sold at a high cost. The text details how new treatments for diseases and vaccines against viruses such as COVID-19 can develop in a rapid fashion when information at all levels of discovery is shared amongst researchers across the world. Open science involves sharing at all levels of research: creating, evaluating, sharing, exploring, and storing scientific knowledge, practices, and perspectives. Open scientific knowledge allows for free access to scientific publications, research, data, open educational resources, software, and source codes from the public domain. These models transcend many barriers of diversity, equity, and inclusion for science information. When students have free access to current scientific information, they too can become citizen scientists. The text is very accessible for middle-grade readers with headings, photographs, and sidebars of additional information.
