Descriptive Review

This nonfiction graphic novel is told from the point of view of three animal characters who go on a weekend camping trip. From Squeak’s treehouse observatory, the three friends demonstrate a sense of wonder and curiosity about the night sky. Key concepts in astronomy are presented on full-page illustrated spreads. Topics covered include the solar system, galaxies, the formation of the universe, and the observable patterns found in the night sky, such as the phases of the moon and constellations.

The narrative jumps between facts about the universe and an illustrated story about the friends’ hijinks during their weekend adventures. Detailed black-and-white artwork provides visual support in understanding astronomy concepts. The final chapter encourages an active engagement with the concepts presented. There are various constellation maps as well as instructions for how to observe the night sky.
