Descriptive Review

This child-friendly animal care guidebook comprehensively introduces readers to the Five Freedoms, which are an international ethical framework for evaluating standards of animal care. Each chapter focuses on one of the Freedoms: freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; freedom from distress (emotional and physical); freedom from discomfort; and freedom to engage in behaviours that promote well-being. The book aims to create empathy, compassion, and understanding in children towards their animal family members as well as exotic, farm, wild, and animals in captivity. The book covers the themes of animal welfare, habitat protection, and rehabilitation. Young activists will be inspired by the author’s guide to Ten Things Students Can Do to Help Animals. Author Jacqueline Pearce wrote this book in consultation with the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), an organization internationally recognized for its innovative humane education and animal welfare work.
